Fondens formål skal være at yde støtte til udforskning af skibsvrag af historisk og kulturel betydning såvel i danske som i udenlandske farvande, at bidrage til eller selv forestå disses hævning og at foretage restaurering af sådanne vrag, som efter fondens mening er bevaringsværdige. Fonden skal også kunne yde støtte til udvikling af nyt skibsmateriel, herunder særligt sejlmateriel, hvorved bemærkes, at disse dispositioner ingensinde må træffes ud fra profithensyn men alene i overensstemmelse med det formål, der er beskrevet i stk. 1 Såfremt det er nødvendigt for at kunne opfylde formålsbestemmelsen, skal fonden kunne eje fast ejendom eller lokaler til brug for udøvelsen af sin ovenfor beskrevne virksomhed. Fonden skal kunne eje skib eller skibsmateriel af kulturhistorisk betydning eller skib, der kan anvendes til uddannelsesformål eller hermed ligestillede formål af socialbetonet karakter. Og iøvrigt at yde støtte til udforskning eller andre projekter af historisk eller kulturel interesse.
