Fonden skal have til formål at etablere og drive almennyttige forskningscentre til udførelse af kliniske undersøgelser af højeste kvalitet og at drive forskning ved de bedste danske og udenlandske forskere indenfor lægevidenskab, alt i overensstemmelse med gældende etiske sundhedsmæssige forskrifter samt at afsætte resultatet af sådanne undersøgelser og forskning til andre forskningscentre, universiteter, hospitaler og medicinalfirmaer. Fondens primære formål er at være initiativtager til forskningsprojekter indenfor ovennævnte område og således at udgøre en "rugekasse" for nye forskningsprojekter/-resultater, der kan afsættes til tredjemand. Fondens virksomhed kan udøves af fonden selv eller af aktieselskaber, eller andre selskaber med begrænset hæftelse, i hvilke fonden besidder en kapitalandel. Bestyrelsen kan træffe beslutning om, at et givent forskningsprojekt, uanset på hvilket stadium det pågældende projekt befinder sig, eller anden virksomhed, afstås, ligesom bestyrelsen til enhver tid kan træffe beslutning om, at kapitalandele i selskaber, jf. stk. 3, afstås helt eller delvist. Indvindes der ved fondens virksomhed overskud udover, hvad der efter bestyrelsens skøn er nødvendigt til at konsolidere og udbygge fondens forskningssktivitet, skal sådanne midler anvendes i almennyttigt eller på anden almenvelgørende øjemed.
